Cocktails & Wine By The Glass

During Prohibition times (1920-1933) when these classic cocktails were originally created, quality alcohol was certainly scarce and hard to come by. Illegal home distilleries (including quite a few operated by enterprising and helpful Lancaster County neighbors!) met the demand, but the moonshiners' homemade spirits, even after being watered down in the bathtub (hence the term ``bathtub gin``) were often not very drinkable. That motivated creative bartenders to create drinks using citrus flavors, sweeteners, and various other additives. Although these additions to “bathtubs” and “backwoods” prohibition-era spirits are very simple and basic, the cocktails that emerged remain prominent in what we enjoy almost 100 years later today. Please enjoy a modern twist on a few of our selections from this innovative era.
